Our Classes and Content
转弯:从最基本的只推一侧转弯到交叉步,有很多内容可以教,从简单开始,慢慢增加难度;
A,B班
Our organization offers multiple levels of classes/groups according to the skill levels and age of each student. We name these groups by letter. Groups include Q, K, A, B, and C.
Group/Class Q (6-8 years old): CLASSES EVERY MONDAY FROM 7-8 PM ----- BEGINNERS
Goal: cultivating interest, focusing on practice, appropriate teaching for our younger students. This is the youngest class offered by our organization.
What to Expect: group classes (10-20 kids per class) on site every Monday from 7-8 PM. These practices will be held in the parking lot of Creekside Middle School in Carmel, Indiana. Note that weekly class locations may change based on special circumstances. During class, our coaches will provide demonstrations and break down the movements for drills and practice. Coaches will correct common errors during practice and will also provide targeted training.
Class Content: starting, balance, braking/downhill, turning, backward skating, obstacle passing. The class is organized into 4-6 15-minute sessions. The first session includes skating continuous laps around a set of cones (each skater will have a counting chip strapped on the helmet for our self-developed lap-counting system). Other sessions may include technical instruction, drills, relay games, etc.
Starting: Children are taught to "walk quietly" and keep the wheels still, standing completely on one side foot. The focus is on moving the center of gravity and avoiding "riding the center of gravity", meaning the center of gravity should be between the two feet, and there should be a clear transition, not staying in the middle and not moving (a typical problem for self-taught roller skaters).
Balance: Emphasis is placed on skating on one foot (it doesn't matter if it's not done perfectly, as long as the concept is understood). There are various ways to do this, such as the Glide with both feet parallel and moving the body to one foot, or slalom skating through cones and moving the center of gravity from side to side. After about 7 minutes, children are asked to stop, ask questions, or demonstrate for everyone. This is an interactive segment that can enhance children's enthusiasm and participation. Attention span for children of this age does not exceed 15 minutes, so it is important to change teaching methods frequently.
Braking/downhill: This is one of the key contents of the class. From the scissor step to the heel brake, it is completed in several steps. Downhill skating is a typical application of braking, and children can try it on a small slope.
Turning: From the most basic turn with one foot to crossover steps, there are many contents that can be taught, starting with the simple ones and gradually increasing the difficulty.
Backward skating: Only a brief introduction is provided. We do not fully teach backward skating techniques nor do we encourage it for beginner skaters; the goal of this technique introduction is for our students to be able to safely recover from a backward skating situation (meaning that if for some reason they end up skating backward, they should be able to maintain balance).
Obstacle Passing: This is often introduced to students so that they may participate in our weekly street-skate or trail skate events. These techniques include
"scissor-stepping," passing through bumpy intersections, and safely skating over uneven surfaces, branches, or stones, etc. We set up deliberate obstacles in the practice area to let children practice skating over them. These controlled drills are supervised by our coaches and volunteer parents.
Group/Class K (9 years old and above): CLASSES EVERY SUNDAY ----- OLDER BEGINNERS
Class Q content is basically the same as Class Q (see above) but the class is shorter, usually completed in 2 to 4 sessions. The focus is on intensive practice and any problems during practice will be addressed collectively.
Group C: Intermediate Street Skating ----- NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS
Problems discovered are addressed in one or two classes. Participation in street/trail skate events are available.
Group A and B: Advanced Street Skating ------ RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE PROFICIENT IN SKATING
Beginner speed roller skating training, with some time devoted to technical instruction on the practice area, or a unified explanation of problems encountered during training at the beginning or end.
